¹     A violin is a string instrument. It has four strings. It is played with a bow. The player holds the violin's neck in one hand. Then body of the violin is placed under her chin. A bow slides across the strings. The sound you hear can be lovely.
 
²     A long time ago, someone took a piece of wood and curved it. Then they tied a string to both ends. This was the first violin. Later, a gourd was used. First, it was hollowed. Then a handle and strings were added. A bow was used for this type of violin. They sounded nice.
 
³     People wanted a better violin. They worked hard. They used many shapes. They changed the size. They tried different materials. Sound was important. The violin was better.
