Earth Day Begins
By Jody Williams

1     How did Earth Day start? Senator Gaylord Nelson was asked that a lot. Senator Nelson was worried about our Earth. He was upset with the government. He believed that the government did not care about the Earth.

2     Senator Nelson spoke to groups of people. He told people how the Earth was being hurt. The people told him that they were worried, too. The problem was that the government was not. In 1969, Senator Nelson got the idea for Earth Day. He saw how young people, angry about the war, joined together to let their voices be heard. He wanted to set aside a day where people would gather together to learn about the environment and talk about ways to protect it.
