The Case of Peculiar Remembrances
By Colleen Messina

1     Mr. McCormick sat back in his old kitchen chair and sighed wearily. He took off his green beret and swooshed his white hair back with a wrinkled, capable hand. Work at the cemetery went well today. He cut the grass, trimmed the hedges, and raked up old leaves. Spring had finally arrived, breathing sweet air over the countryside.

2     Mrs. McCormick brought a cup of steaming tea to her husband. Their life was simple. They tended the cemetery grounds and lived on its edge in a tiny house. Some of their friends thought living next to a place where the dead spent eternity was creepy, but the McCormicks, with their no-nonsense Irish heritage, were not superstitious. They were down-to-earth and hardworking people. The cemetery caretaker's job was practical; it gave them a home and an enviable schedule.

3     "I overheard some interesting remembrances today," said Mr. McCormick nonchalantly, as he sipped his scalding Red Zinger tea.
