Price of a Dare, Part 1
By Mary Lynn Bushong

1     Alvin's skis glided smoothly across the snow. "Shhh, shhh," they seemed to whisper in the frozen air. The only thing that marked his passage over the snow was the pair of shallow troughs in the snow.

2     The boy checked his watch. He was making good time today. He measured the distance to the top of the ridge with his eye.

3     I should be able to get there in good time, he thought.

4     He dug in with the poles and swooshed along the unused trail. He used his momentum to get part way up the slope. Then he used a hopping side step to get the rest of the way up the low ridge. He looked at his watch and smiled. A new personal best!
