Price of a Dare, Part 3
By Mary Lynn Bushong

The sight of the snowshoe tracks caused Alvin to pause for just a moment. He followed them with his eyes. The only thing up there was the den. The tracks only went one way. Perhaps he still had time.

Alvin took a moment to snap and couple of pictures of the snowshoe tracks before hurrying away. He had a cell phone for emergencies, but it didn't work well in this area. There were too many hills and not enough towers.

Wait, he thought, there was one place he'd heard of, not too far away, where the signal could get through. Alvin altered his course slightly but continued to hurry.

As soon as he began to get near the area, he started trying to call the game warden. The warden Alvin wanted was out, but one of the others offered to contact him by radio. Alvin hoped he would hurry.

The young skier decided to circle back around. If nothing else, maybe he could get some pictures of the poacher. He could stay out of sight and still get evidence. The small electronic camera had a decent little zoom lens that might do the job.

It seemed like it took forever to work his way around. On the way, he made a discovery that had him grinning with delight. Hidden under a white tarp was a snowmobile. Alvin took off a glove and rested it against the engine cover. It was still just a little bit warm. He looked and saw snowshoe tracks leading away. They looked the same as those he'd seen heading for the den. He snapped some more pictures.

He lifted the engine cover and stared at the motor. It took only a moment for him to reach in and remove the spark plug wires. He stuffed them into his pocket and smiled. That machine wasn't going anywhere soon! He put the engine cover back in place and pulled the tarp back over it all.

Alvin hurried. That poacher could be headed back this way any time. He toyed with the idea of removing the skis, but the snow was very deep in places. It would be even slower going without them.

In the distance, Alvin heard a muffled cough. He ducked behind a large tree and tried to still his breathing. Then he reached inside his coat and pulled out the camera. He couldn't do anything about the bear, but he could help stop this person from poaching again.
