Finland's Winter Olympic History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Do you have a favorite kind of music? Most people do. When do you like to listen to it? Does it help to calm you down, or does it make you excited and ready to move? Do you listen to music to forget your problems, or do you listen to music to help you think? Music means many things to many people, and people use music for all sorts of things. You can probably think of dozens of ways music affects you.

2     Now imagine you're a world champion snowboarder. You've got thousands of people watching you as you attack the halfpipe. Your heart is racing, and you're trying to stay focused. Would you listen to music then? One world champion snowboarder from Finland would say yes. His name is Antti Autti, and he would probably be listening to some pretty heavy rock.

3     Finland has competed in every one of the Winter Olympic Games. Its athletes have done well for their country; Finnish athletes have won 151 medals. That puts Finland at number six on the all-time medals list. Finnish ski jumpers account for many of its medal winners. Ten of the country's gold medals have come from ski jumpers. One of Finland's most interesting winter athletes is a man named Matti Nykanen. He's earned a reputation as a great skier and as an unpredictable public figure.
