1     Flowers are given to winners at the Olympics. In 2002, Vonetta Flowers was on the U.S. bobsled team. It won a gold medal at the 2002 Olympics. Vonetta Flowers was the first African American to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
 
2     Vonetta set other "firsts" too. She was first in her family to go to college. No one in her family had ever gone to the Olympics. Vonetta ran track. Track was her favorite sport. She dreamed of running in the Summer Olympics. She tried but did not make it. Her husband wanted them both to try out for the bobsled team. He did not make it. She did. He was her coach.
