¹     When Canada was being settled, a large number of the people were from Britain. This included not only the English, but also the Scots and other people from the United Kingdom. One of those Scots was William Lyon Mackenzie.
 
²     Mackenzie was born near Dundee, Scotland on March 12, 1795. When he was 25, he moved to Montreal. There, he worked for a short time on the Lachine Canal. In his off hours he wrote for the "Montreal Journal."
 
³     Within a few months he moved to York [Toronto]. Then he moved to Queenston in the Niagara area. It was there he established "The Colonial Advocate," a newspaper critical of the Family Compact.
 
⁴     Six months later, in the fall of 1824, he moved his paper to York. It was the only way he could keep on top of political issues.
 
⁵     From the very first issue of his paper, the general public loved the paper. He spoke out about what he thought and used clear, strong language. His personal popularity grew the more he called for reform. It grew with everyone except York's upper class who were part of the Family Compact. In 1826, several wealthy young men attacked his shop. They broke the press and dumped much of the printing type into Toronto harbour.
