Skateboarding
By Colleen Messina

1     If you think of ollie as just someone's name, you probably are not a skateboarder. Skateboarding is full of tricks, and one of those tricks is called an ollie. Skateboarding is a vigorous sport that some people might call extreme, but most skateboarders just think that they are having a good time.

2     Skateboarding is riding on a small board with wheels on it. Some people call it a sport. Others think of it as an art. Some people use skateboards as a way of getting around so that they can beat the gas prices. In any case, skateboarding is a popular activity with about 12.5 million skateboarders in the world in 2002. Most skateboarders are boys who are under the age of 18, but anyone can try it.

3     Skateboarding has not been around for long. It started in the 1950s as "sidewalk surfing." It started in California. The first skateboards were flat wooden planks with wheels attached. By the 1960s, skateboarding became popular. In 1965, people watched the international championships on national television. Today, some people think that skateboarding should be an Olympic sport. Others disagree with this. They think that putting skateboarding in the Olympics would restrict the sport. Skateboarders don't want too many rules!
