1     Cuando vagamos por un bosque, a menudo escuchamos un golpeteo rápido. Al mirar a nuestro alrededor para tratar de localizar el origen del sonido, al fin vemos un pájaro carpintero golpeando el pico con esmero contra el tronco de un árbol.
 
2     Los pájaros carpinteros son aves sorprendentes porque poseen dos habilidades especiales que ninguna otra ave tiene -los pájaros carpinteros pueden agarrarse de los troncos de los árboles en posición vertical, y pueden taladrar orificios en la madera con su pico en forma de cincel. Existen cerca de 200 especies diferentes de pájaros carpinteros en el mundo, y podemos encontrarlos casi en todas partes. Los únicos continentes que no los tienen son Australia y la
