The State that is "Round on the Ends and ‘HI' in the Middle" (O-HI-O)
By Melissa S. Hoffman

1     There are many things that make Ohio a unique and one of a kind state. Many fabulous firsts and facts can be found coming out of the "Buckeye" state.

2     Ohio is considered to be the Mother of Presidents, as she has claim to eight of them. Did you know, though, that only seven of them were really born there, making the eighth one simply a resident of the state? The seven who were born in the state of Ohio were Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, and Warren G. Harding. The eighth one, William Henry Harrison, and grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, was actually born in Virginia, but claims Ohio as his real home, having fought along side General "Mad" Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers, as well as against Tecumseh a few years later.

3     Also known as the Mother of Inventors, Ohio proudly salutes its various inventors, making our world today much better off! Thomas Alva Edison was from Milan, Ohio, and was well known for inventing such things as the stock ticker, the light bulb, the phonograph (known as the record player), and the motion picture. All but four of Edison's inventions are still being used today. Along with Edison, Ohioan Charles Brush invented a way to light city streets with electricity, calling it the "arc light." He also built a power station to light up the city, powering the first city, Cleveland, to be lighted by electricity. Brush and Edison's work together created the world famous General Electric Company. James Ritty invented the cash register and cash register tape, and he later formed the National Cash Register Company with a man named John H. Patterson. Charles Kettering invented the first electrical motor for the cash register, since it had been previously run by a hand crank. He also invented the first self-starter for the automobile, having also previously been hand cranked. "Boss Ket" as some called this intelligent inventor, also designed the ignition systems on cars, leaded gasoline, and the first pilotless aircraft, improving on what other inventors had started. Kettering and a man named Edward Deeds formed a company called DELCO (Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company).
