One Penny at a Time
By Lisa Smolowitz

1     On a chilly evening in November 1991, four-year-old Nora Gross and her father Teddy were walking down Broadway, a busy street in New York City.

2     As they were walking, little Nora saw a homeless man. He was huddled in a refrigerator carton next to a newsstand. She asked her dad, "Can we take him home?" Her dad said no, but he began to think about how they might help the homeless people.

3     One day soon after they saw the homeless man, Teddy went to pick Nora up at the babysitter's house. The babysitter was talking about pennies that she had sitting in a jar. She said they were useless to her.
