1     If you have ever heard of Ramona Quimby, then you probably know of the celebrated author Beverly Cleary. Ms. Cleary was born as Beverly Bunn in McMinnville, Oregon. When she was a very young girl, her family lived on a farm in Yamhill. This little town did not even have a library! That is, until her mother started the very first library in Yamhill.

2     When Beverly was learning to read in the first grade, she found that she could not read very well. She was put into a group of students who had the same problem. She tried and tried but still could not grasp the skill of reading. She read a few words here and there, but the books for her age never excited her much. It wasn't until she was in the third grade that she ran across a book called The Dutch Twins. She originally picked up the book just to look at the pictures. However, when she began to read the book, she found it very interesting and could not put it down. She read all day long, finishing the book that afternoon. This was the beginning of her journey into the splendid life of books.

3     When Beverly was in seventh grade, her teacher told her that she should think about writing children's books when she got older. She began to believe her teacher's encouragement. She visited the library quite frequently, but she found that none of the books she picked up were written about children who were like her. Where were all the friends and pets? And where were all the funny things that happened to everyone living in a neighborhood like hers?
