Vatican - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Do you know what the smallest country in the world is? This country is so small you might not even see it on a map of the world. That's because it is no bigger than a small city neighborhood. This country is just about one square kilometer in size! It is called the Holy See, but many people call it the Vatican.

2     The Vatican is in Italy. It is actually a neighborhood in downtown Rome. If you were walking around Rome, you could walk into the Vatican and not even know you're in a different country. Inside the Vatican are gardens, churches, museums, and some homes. If you guessed that not many people live in the Vatican, you're right!

3     But don't let the Vatican's size and population fool you. To millions of people all over the world, it is the most important and most powerful country. Why? Because the Vatican is the center of the Roman Catholic Church. Many of the church's top leaders live in the Vatican, including the pope. The pope is the one man in charge of all the church's leaders. There have been many popes throughout history. Today, Pope Benedict XVI, who lives in the Vatican, leads the Catholic Church.
