Poland - Culture (Nicolaus Copernicus)
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     Poland has a rich culture. Its culture stretches back hundreds of years. It includes some famous people, places, and things. One of Poland's most famous citizens is a man who changed the world. This man understood important things about our world, our solar system, and our universe. Many thought he was crazy. Others thought he was a genius. Some even thought he was the devil. This man's name was Nicolaus Copernicus.

2     Nicolas Copernicus was born in Torun, Poland, on February 19, 1473. He was the youngest of four children. His name at birth was Mikolai Kopernik. Later in his life, he chose the Latin version of his name -- Nicolaus Copernicus.

3     When Nicolaus was a young boy, just 10 years old, his father died. He and his brothers and sisters moved in with their uncle, Lucas. Lucas was a canon, an officer of a Catholic church. In 1488, when Nicolas was 15, Lucas sent him to a church school. After three years there, Nicolaus went to the University of Krakow. The university was one of the greatest in Europe at the time.
