Paraguay - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     There is a saying that goes, "Money is the root of all evil." Simply put, it means that the pursuit of money, above all else, brings out the worst in people. Do you agree? Think about your own life and things you really want. Have you ever made a really bad decision, or hurt someone, to get something you wanted? Many people have. World history is full of examples of this. But there's one place where you can find an opposite example, and that country is Paraguay.

2     Paraguay is a little-known country in central South America. It is little known, even to its neighbors, because it has been ignored for a very long time. Beginning in the 15th century, explorers from Europe, especially Spain and Portugal, began arriving in the Americas, known at that time as the "New World." The explorers came to find riches to take home to Europe. They found plenty of riches, like silver and gold, but also found many troubles. Explorers found native groups that fought them bitterly.

3     Most countries in the Americas offered something to the Europeans, so the Europeans found reasons to stay and take over. Initially, Paraguay was no different. Spanish explorers Juan de Salazar de Espinosa and Gonzalo de Mendoza set up a fort along the Rio Paraguay on August 15, 1537. Their fort would become Paraguay's capital city of Asuncion.
