Guyana - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman

1     What kind of person are you? Think about the words you would use to describe yourself. Do you consider yourself kind and friendly? Now think about why you have those traits. Is it because of how you were raised, where you live, how much money your parents make, or a combination of everything? Can some of it be because of your race or religion?

2     There was a man who thought a lot about those questions. This man was Walter Rodney. He was born poor in Guyana, but grew to be a very powerful man. So powerful, in fact, that his government had him killed.

3     Rodney was born in Guyana's capital of Georgetown on March 23, 1942. He was born to working parents. His father was a tailor and his mother was a seamstress. His family didn't have a lot of money. But they were better off than Guyana's many poor families. After primary school, Rodney won a scholarship to study at Queens College. This chance for higher education changed Rodney.
