¹     Who doesn't love a parade? Have you ever been to a parade? If you have, you probably had a good time. A parade is a celebration that has marchers, vehicles, and other special attractions. Some parades are for Columbus Day, some are for St. Patrick's Day, some are for Thanksgiving Day, and some are for many other reasons.
 
²     There's a special parade that is held each year in Pasadena, California. It is called the Tournament of Roses Parade. It celebrates New Year's Day in a very unique way.
 
³     The first Tournament of Roses was held in 1890 by Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club. Why did they decide to have a parade? Believe it or not, many of the members were first from the Eastern and Midwestern parts of the United States where there was a lot of snow in the winter. After moving to California, they wanted to celebrate their mild winters and show off their beautiful flowers in their "paradise."
 
⁴     Well, two thousand people showed up at the town lot for that first celebration. Professor Holder called the festival, or celebration, the Tournament of Roses. There were flower-covered carriages, foot races, polo matches, and tugs of war.
 
⁵     In later years, there were marching bands and motorized floats. Sometimes there were ostrich races or races between camels and elephants! In 1895, the parade became so big that the Tournament of Roses Association took it over from the Valley Hunt Club.
