Watercolor Washout
By Mary L. Bushong

1     Amy put down the paintbrush and reached out to stretch her arms. She stared at the picture she was working on with a critical eye. The heavy paper on the easel in front of her was bright with color. She thought the picture looked a lot like her family's flower garden. On the ground beside her was the metal case that held her watercolor paints and extra brushes. She nodded to herself, pleased with the result so far.

2     "It's not bad," she murmured to herself.

3     "What's not bad?" asked a voice behind her.

4     Amy jumped at the sound of her little brother's voice. Where had he come from?

5     "It's none of your business," she snapped. She just wanted him to go away and leave her alone.
