A Poem - by Jake
By Beth and Douglas Beutler

1     "Oh boy. I have to write a poem. Great," Jake thought with disgust. "I am awful at writing stuff. I wish I didn't have to do it. I'll be lucky if I get a D on this!"

2     The teacher had given them a list of words and asked the class to make up a short poem. Some of the words were tough to use in the poem. Jake stared at the list. For a while, no ideas came to him. Then he decided to just write about what he felt. He was surprised when some ideas started to flow.

3     He spent several minutes at his desk. He was so absorbed in his poem that he didn't realize that the other kids had left for recess. His teacher, Mrs. Grace, came up to his desk and said, "Aren't you going out for recess?"

4     "Oh," Jake replied. "I'll just be a minute. Thanks."

5     He finished the poem and walked up to Mrs. Grace's desk. "Here you go," he said. Then he took off outside to see his friends.
